There Is No Gaming Community

Recently, Jimmy Kimmel made a remark that he didn’t understand why people are watching people play video games on Youtube and Twitch.

Of course, some people took to Twitter to insult and otherwise verbally attack Kimmel. Already the outcry against the “gamer community” has begun.

Look, I’m a gamer and I don’t get why you’d watch someone else play a video game. (Unless it’s a tutorial or for tips.) From what I can tell, the Twitch/Youtube phenomena of watching people play video games a generational thing, not a gamer/non-gamer thing. I’m a gamer, have been since the 80s. Watching someone play a game is BORING. I remember when it was a bad thing to invite someone over to your house to play video games, only to hog the controller the whole time they were there. Watching someone on Youtube play a game feels the same as that to me. So, let’s stop painting gamers with the same wide brush.

Unlike many other hobbies that are a niche, gaming is wide and vast. At this point in time, video gaming is as big/bigger than the movie industry. It’s a norm. Really, when you say “gamer” you mean “everyone under 45”. (To different degrees based on age.)  So, when people talk about “the gaming community” I get defensive, especially when the discussion is about how terrible “the community” is. (See Gamergate) What community? What they really mean when they say “Gamers” is PEOPLE on the internet. Gaming used to be a niche, so you could identify a gamer “type”. Not anymore. Now, gamers are everyone. So, when a bunch of terrible people start attacking a female internet celebrity, or a gaming journalist, or a late night comedian, they’re just terrible people. Not gamers. There is no more a  “gamer community” as there is a “movie goer” community, or a “TV viewer” community. When a niche becomes the mainstream it’s not a “community” anymore. It’s just the majority of PEOPLE.

Simply place it in a function in your .bash_profile with the IPs you want to connect to and voila!

For example :

function ssh-hosts() {

       ~/csshX-master/csshX 10.10.10.1 10.10.10.2 10.10.10.3 10.10.10.4

}

After running “source .bash_profile” for your shell to re-read your .bash_profile, typing “ssh-hosts” will connect to the 4 IPs you provided, open up 4 ssh windows, and a single “master” window for controlling all 4 ssh sessions. Brilliant!

What’s That Red Button on Eddie’s Guitar?

I’ve been wondering what that red dot or button on Eddie’s EVH Stealth was for a while. After some Google-Fu I came across the following video that explains what it is and where you can get one. It’s basically a mute button, to replicate that Jimmy Page quick muting oscillation sound that occurred when he quickly threw the Les Paul pickup selector switch back and forth with one of the pickup’s volume turned down. Unlike the Les Paul, the EVH Wolfgang guitar only has 1 volume knob, so I guess Eddie had his guitar techs just add the mute button to get the same effect.

He’s like, ‘This is my stage outfit.’ That’s when I realized it wasn’t going to work. But I don’t dislike Gary at all.”

EVH Reveals New “Vintage” Amp on the Way

Q: Speaking of equipment, what new EVH gear are you working on?

A: People are always screaming and yelling for that classic vintage guitar sound. The 5150 III amps are very high-gain. The main thing that we’re working on is an amp that is modeled after the old vintage Marshall that I used on the first six records. I wanted more sustain out of them.

The difference between the 5150 III amp, and this new amp we are working on is the tubes. They use EL34 tubes, which are more like my original vintage Marshall. Still trying to figure what to call it. Might call it the 5150 III-IV because they use the EL34 tubes. I told Howard Kaplan, the amp guy at Fender/EVH, what I wanted, and just last week they all came out and I gave it a test run. It blew my mind. It has the old vintage tone but with more sustain
