Best Green Day Album Ever

While I sit here writing a test plan for work, I’m listening to the Green Day “American Idiot” album. The more I listen to it, the more I love it. Like Queensryche’s “Operation Mindcrime”, or Van Halen’s “For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge”, “American Idiot” is the album where the band’s musical maturity and gut instincts are at the perfect levels to make an incredible album The anthem, “Jesus Of Suburbia / City Of The Damned / I Don’t Care / Dearly Beloved / Tales Of Another Broken Home” has got to be Green Day’s best musical achievement. If you haven’t listened to this album in its entirety, I recommend you do. Good ALBUMS are hard to come by these days with singles seeming to be the only focus.

I’m Dreaming of a White Carvin…

with every review and post I read.

I want to order a Carvin X110B Reissue SO bad. The first 100 sold are autographed by Carson Kiesel, the “Car” part of “Carvin”, and for a limited time you get a free footswitch too.

Time Warner Upgraded My SA Explorer 8300D

I’ve had my Scientific Atlanta HD DVR from Time Warner for several years. A couple friends of min recently got one too, and the first thing I noticed was that their user interface looked entirely different than mine. Obviously, their boxes were running a newer version of the SA Explorer 8300HD operating system. The interface was much prettier. The text was sharp, the colors were bright, and GUI images were less pixelated. I thought to myself, “wow – I wish Time Warner would upgrade mine to that.”

Last week, my DVR rebooted itself early in the morning. When it came back up, I discovered that it had been upgraded to the newest version of the Explorer OS. At first, I was happy about it, but now that I’ve had to use the thing for a week, I want the older version back. Remember how several sentences back I commented on how “pretty” the new GUI was? Well, that’s the ONLY thing that’s improved.

Here’s my complaints about the newer OS…

1) You can no longer use the “Source” button on the remote to choose your zoom options. So, if you’re watching a standard definition show, that’s in letterbox format, you can’t just hit the “Source” button to zoom in and fill the screen with the letterboxed image. (I understand that most of Time Warner’s customers won’t care about this issue, because they most likely have their box set up to stretch 4:3 pictures to 16:9, but I didn’t buy an HDTV to deform what I’m watching.)

2) Forward and Backward search speeds and delays have changed. The Search forward and backwards speeds are much slower. I used to click the >> button twice to “forward-wind” through commercials. Now, I have to click the >> button 3 times to get the same speed. Also, once I’ve gotten through the commercials, and hit “Play” when my show starts, the DVR will skip backwards many seconds sticking me in the commercials again. I used to be able to time it perfectly.

3) You can no longer scroll through your favorite channels in the Programming Menu by clicking the “Fav” button on the remote. Now if you do so, you’re removed from the menu, and clicking “Fav” changes the channel you’re tuned to.

4) Scrolling through the Programming Menu is MUCH SLOWER. I used to be able to scroll right and left at a quick pace to find a show several days ahead at a particular time to record. Now they want you to use the “Day” button on the remote where each time you push it, you have to put up with a “Please Wait” message that lasts for several seconds while it loads the schedule and re-buffers whatever is showing in the playback window.

So, in a nutshell – this OS upgrade appears to be another example of form over function. Sure the UI looks pretty, but functionally the new OS is severely lacking. It’s slow, and missing features that I used a lot. Please Time Warner, can I have my old OS back?

Linux Geeks vs Windows Geeks

I’ve worked in both Windows and Linux shops, and there are subtle differences between the geekdom peasants in each. I’ve collected the ones I’ve noticed from my own experiences, and made a list out of them. (I’m skipping the obvious technological differences.) Keep in mind that I’m basing this list on the geeks I know in my little corner of the world, so your mileage may vary. 😉

Windows Geeks go to Vegas for Blackjack.
Linux Geeks go to Vegas for Cirque du Soleil.

Windows Geeks drink coffee.
Linux Geeks drink super caffeinated soft drinks.

Windows Geeks watch football.
Linux Geeks watch soccer.

Windows Geeks eat Fish and Chips.
Linux Geeks eat Sushi.

Windows Geeks drive Hybrids.
Linux Geeks drive Bio-diesel Mercs.

Windows Geeks jog.
Linux Geeks play Wii Sports.

Windows Geeks play World of Warcraft.
Linux Geeks play World of Warcraft. (Oh. Wait. That’s the same.)

So in the end, it appears that the thing that unites us is WoW. Is there anything that game can’t do? Hmmm, now that I think more about it, there’s a bunch more things Windows and Linux Geeks have in common. I think I’ll do that list tomorrow. 😀

Lost Boys 2 Trailer

The Corey’s are back! While I want to be excited about this movie, there’s a really good chance it’s going to suck. It is nice to hear a new version of “Cry Little Sister” in the trailer though.

Movie Review : The Mist

There hasn’t been a movie that wasted my time this much in a long while. I could sum up this movie in 4 words : “steaming pile of crap.” It actually made me angry. The worst kind of movie is the one that keeps your attention for hours, only to have an ending that makes those 2 hours pointless. It’s infuriating. Don’t drag me along for 2 hours just to go, “Gotcha! We got you invested in the characters and their responses to the situations in which they were placed for no reason!” This was an entertaining movie for about 98% of it, and then the ending totally nullifies that 98%. I don’t know why I keep giving movies based on Stephen King novels a chance. The only good Stephen King movies are the ones based on his non-horror short stories: Shawshank Redemption, Stand By Me, The Green Mile, etc…

Garfield Minus Garfield

In case you haven’t already heard, there’s a site called Garfield Minus Garfield where the author Photoshops out Garfield in each strip with hillarious results. The Garfield comic strip becomes totally about Jon, who appears Manic Depressive and Schizophrenic. Here’s an example :
